I'm used to getting my car inspected. Texas requires the same thing. My inspection expires the last day in December. Since we have lived in North Carolina, I don't think we have ever had my car inspected on time. December is filled with Christmas and our minds are not turned to maintenance of the car. So every year we receive a letter in the mail at the end of February stating that we have until May 1 to get the emmisions test done or we will be fined $250. This is enough of a warning for me to go get the car inspected! SO...today, Emma and I spent 25 minutes sitting inside a little Texaco station waiting for the car to be inspected. There is a place on 49 where we ususally go, but the guy who does the inspections was out to a meeting and wouldn't be back for an hour and a half (we get to stay in the car there, so I like it better...but we didn't have an hour and a half to wait for the guy). My point...can someone please tell me why I have to pay an extra $10 to have my window tint inspected? They use a little device that goes against the window and it takes less than a minute! Anyway...no use complaining about it. The fact of the matter is that it costs $40 to get my car inspected (23.50 for the actual inspection, 6.50 for the sticker and 10.00 for the tint inspection). Until next year my car inspection friends! Maybe next year I will remember my inspection before December and get it done in November! :-)

Ah...how I don't miss car inspections!!! We don't need them here in Johnson City, which saves us at least $60 a year and our time to boot! Our inspections were due in up Sept...the same month we moved! Also, vehicle registrations fees are about $30 cheaper per car. Property taxes are significantly less, too. There are a few things I like about TN...vehicle fees (or lack of, to be more specific) is one!!!
Nicole, just be glad you don't live in California...the smog capital of the world...
Cost me $15 in Texas!! Such a silly law...who knows if the car is safe as soon as it leaves the lot? A light goes out, brakes stop working, etc.

When we lived in NC many years ago there was no inspection. At least I don't remember one. Just be thankful that you don't live in Maine where the salt eats out the floorboard of your car as well as the fenders. Then you have to replace all that before they will inspect your car! Window tint inspection? The state needed some extra money! Here in Lynchburg they charge 11% meal tax and make more money than the $10 to check window tint! That's the worst one I've heard yet!!!

It's just a little way to get more money out of people who have tinted windows. The government will get you on any little thing they can.
Window tint in NC can only be up to 32% tinted, so they have to prove that it is not more than that. That's the only reason for the tint check. Trucks are the only vehicles in NC that can have a window tinted as dark as they want, but only the back window. Strange laws...
hey nicole, im a certified NC state inspector and starting on Oct 1, 2008 you will no longer have to worry about your inspection sticker expiring, cause they are being phased out. Your inspection "sticker" will be the expiration of your vehicle registration (not including the 15 day grace period). But during this process, you may go over the normal 12 month span, which there will be no fines or penalties. If you don't get it inspected before you go to renew the plate, all the dmv will say is to get it inspected before you renew the plate. hope this can help you on forgetting to renew the sticker!
